How to choose decorative candles for your home
A decorative candle is, first of all, an object. It spends far more time unlit than lit, and that is how it becomes part of a home — sitting on a shelf, a table or a console. Choosing one is closer to choosing a piece of decor than to choosing a scent.
Start with the place, not the candle
The most useful question is a simple one: where will it go? A coffee table needs a piece that reads well from above and from every side. A shelf needs height and silhouette. A bedside table needs something small and calm. Deciding on the place first avoids the most common mistake — buying a beautiful candle that never finds a home.
Shape and scale
A sculptural candle works like a small sculpture: it needs space around it to be read. On a crowded surface it disappears.
- Small pieces look best in a group or next to other objects — books, a vase, a ceramic bowl.
- Medium pieces hold their own on a bedside table or a shelf.
- Large pieces need a clear surface and become the focal point of the room. See our large candles.
A practical rule: group in odd numbers and vary the heights. Three pieces of different sizes almost always work better than two identical ones.
Colour and material
Neutral tones — whites, creams, sand — fit almost any interior and let the shape speak. A strong colour, such as cobalt blue or red, works best as a single accent in a calm room. Pair the candle with natural materials: wood, linen, stone and ceramics underline its handmade character.
Room by room
- Living room — coffee table, console or sideboard; the best place for a piece with presence.
- Bedroom — soft shapes and quiet colours, on the bedside table or the chest of drawers.
- Bathroom — small pieces, away from splashes.
- Hallway — a single striking piece on the console sets the tone at the door.
To burn or to keep?
Many people prefer to keep sculptural candles intact, as objects. That is a perfectly valid choice. If you do want to light one, always place it on a plate or a heat-resistant base: a candle without a container melts outwards. Our guide on how to light and care for a candle covers the rest.
Decorative candles with a Portuguese identity
At Amavela, candles are made by hand in Porto, in soy wax, and many draw on Portuguese references: Azulejo Motif revisits the azulejo tile pattern, White Pearl Classic starts from the shape of an oyster, and Atlantic Calm brings the whale of the Atlantic.
